NORTH CANTON, OH - After 30 minutes, Walsh led the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers by just two, 60-58. That's when it went all wrong for the good guys, as the Cavaliers closed the game on a 27-11 run the outlast Wesleyan and take the game 87-69.
The Panthers fall to 9-10 (5-6 G-MAC), while Walsh improves to 12-7 (9-3 G-MAC).
Wesleyan opened the game up strong, hitting their first four shots and taking a quick 11-4 lead. After Walsh came storming back,
Ben Sisson kept the Panthers ahead with a layup in the paint to make it 13-10 with five minutes gone by. Walsh then went on a quick 10-0 run, which was stopped by a
JoMel Boyd jumper in the paint with 10:28 remaining in the half. After Walsh extend their lead back to nine with seven minutes left in the period, the Panthers chipped away, using buckets from Boyd,
Kennedy Miles, and
Antonio Thomas to cut the lead to just 33-30 with 3:46 left in the half. Walsh hit a jumper right at the end of the period and went into the locker room with a 39-36 lead over Wesleyan.
Things looked good for the Panthers early, as they took a 40-39 lead on a Sisson layup just a minute in. Walsh quickly took the lead back and extended it out to eight just four minutes later. The Panthers clawed their way back, making it a two-point game with 10 minutes remaining. Walsh then caught fire, hitting four threes over the next five minutes and quickly extending their lead out to 17, 79-62. They cruised to the finish and took this one 87-69.
Wesleyan went 26-59 (44.1%) from the field and 10-26 (38.5%) from three. Walsh shot extremely well, going 32-60 (53.3%) from the floor and 11-27 (40.7%) from behind the arc. Bench points was the difference in the game, as Walsh outscored Wesleyan's bench 23-2.
Antonio Thomas tied a career high with 20 points, including 5-7 from three.
JoMel Boyd notched 19,
Edward Jones Jr. added 16, and
Ben Sisson finshed with 10. Sisson and Boyd each grabbed four rebounds, and Thomas dished out three assists.
The Panthers will look to get back to .500 on Saturday when they travel to Painesville, Ohio, to take on Lake Erie, who will be coming off a 66-60 win over Trevecca Nazarene. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. CT.
