OWENSBORO, KY - It was the first official game in the newly renovated Jones Gym, and volleyball definitely made it exciting. They took a 2-1 lead over visiting Cedarville before the Yellow Jackets clawed their way back to squeak out the five set victory.
Cedarville moves to 5-6 (3-1 G-MAC) while the Panthers fall to 2-9 (0-3 G-MAC).
After Cedarville took the opening set 25-13, Wesleyan came out swinging in set two. Thanks to three kills from
Hallie McGuire, the Panthers got out to an early 10-2 lead in the frame. Wesleyan rode that momentum for the rest of the set, eventually using two
Ava Rebarchik service aces near the end of the set to seal the 25-11 win.
Set three was a back and forth battle, with CU leading 12-11 at around the halfway mark. Wesleyan fought throughout the rest of the set and, up just 18-16, went on a 5-0 run to take a convincing 22-16 lead late in the frame. After a few more back and forth battles, kills from
Madelyn Hoskins and
Ava Rebarchik sealed the 25-19 set victory for the Panthers. Sets four and five saw the Yellow Jackets take early leads and ride them out to 25-18 and 15-11 victories, giving them the overall win.
In a balanced performance,
Olivia Patton led the way with 11 kills, followed by
Diana Wesolosky and
Hallie McGuire, who each had 10.
Karrah Cron continued her strong season with 24 assists, while
Mariah Jones added four blocks. Cron (15), McGuire (14), and
Danielle Nelson (12) each reached double digits in digs.
The Panthers won't have to wait long for a chance at their first win in the new Jones Gym, as they host Ohio Dominican tomorrow afternoon. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
