Panthers come from behind to take down USI in high scoring affair

EVANSVILLE, IND - It was a roller coaster of a game, but the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers ended up on top, defeating the Southern Indiana Screaming Eagles 11-7 in Evansville on Tuesday night. KWC used five runs in the 8th to turn a one-run deficit into a four-run lead. This completes a season sweep over USI for the Panthers as they defeated their rivals from across the river 4-1 last week.

KWC now moves to 18-24 (14-10 G-MAC) while USI falls to 15-26 (4-12 GLVC).

Wesleyan started off hot, using RBI's from Hunter Combs, Sammy Rowan and Jaret Humphrey to go up 3-0 after the first inning. USI then scored six runs over the next three innings to take a 6-3 lead going into the fourth.

After a Ben Wilcoxson single loaded the bases in the top of the fourth, Hunter Combs hit a sacrifice fly to get a run back for the Panthers and make it a 6-4 ballgame. The Screaming Eagles matched the Panther's run in the bottom of the fifth with an RBI triple to extend their lead back to three, 7-4.

With two outs in the top of the sixth, a Combs walk brought up Kyle Werries, who immediately hit an RBI double to make it a 7-5 game. Sammy Rowan then hit his second triple of the day on the next at bat to bring home Werries and put the Panthers within one.

After a scoreless seventh inning from both teams, Wesleyan caught fire in the eighth, taking advantage of USI pitching miscues to score five runs in the inning. After two hit-by-pitches and a walk early in the inning, Kyle Richardson hit a 2 RBI double to left field to give Wesleyan the lead. Two batters later, Robert Chayka hit a 2 RBI single to bring home Humphrey and Richardson to make it a 10-7 ballgame. Wesleyan scored their final run of the game on a Hunter Combs RBI walk with the bases loaded to put them up 11-7.

Drake Hamil came in to pitch the final two innings and shut the Screaming Eagles down, allowing just two hits while striking out two of his own to secure the four-run victory for the good guys.

Sammy Rowan was the MVP of the game, going 3-for4 with 2 RBI's, 2 runs scored, 2 triples, and 2 walks. Jaret Humphrey finished the game going 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored. Robert Chayka and Kyle Richardson each also recorded two hits.

Rylan Thomas (5-3) came in during the third inning and pitched a solid 4.2 innings of work to secure his fifth victory of the season.

Wesleyan will get back to conference play this weekend when they travel north to Hillsdale, Michigan to take on the Chargers in a series with big G-MAC implications. First pitch will be Saturday at 12 p.m. CT.
