Dragons Top Panthers in Saturday Double-Dip

TIFFIN, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan baseball team was reunited with Tiffin University on Saturday afternoon. The two teams last played in the Great Midwest Conference Tournament Semi-Finals last spring. The Dragons won the last meeting and picked-up two wins on Saturday winning the opener 22-9 while edging the Panthers 3-0 in the second game of the series.

The Panthers (16-23, 13-9 GMAC) loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, but did not score. The Dragons (24-15, 19-5 GMAC) took advantage in the bottom half of the first as they scored three runs on four hits with the big blow being a two-out three-run homerun.

Wesleyan answered right back in the top of the second as their patient approach got runners in scoring position. Back-to-back singles by Ben Wilcoxson and Hunter Combs each drove-in a run to pull the Panthers to 3-2. Tiffin scored three in the bottom of the second and one in the fourth to take a 7-2 lead into the top of the fifth.

However, the Panthers had other plans for the Great Midwest front-runners. Combs led-off the fifth with a solo homerun. Kyle Werries walked while Sammy Rowan was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for Jaret Humphrey. A single by Humphrey added another run while an error allowed the Panthers to plate an extra run to pull within 7-5.

Later in the frame Humphrey scored on a balk while Kyle Richardson drove-in Cade Gudalis with a RBI single that tied the game, 7-7. The Dragons' bats came alive thereafter as they scored five in the bottom of the fifth, one in the sixth, and eight in the seventh.

Combs, Humphrey, and Gudails each recorded two hit games while Humphrey and Combs each drove-in two runs.

In game two the Dragons manufactured three runs in the third inning to defeat the Panthers. A sacrifice fly scored the first run of the game while an infield single with two-outs added another run in the frame.

The third inning was the lone blemish on the Brayden Bush's resume as he pitched a complete game allowing three runs, on three hits with five strikeouts. Richardson finished the game two for three with a double.

The Panthers will play two more against the Dragons on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM CT.
