Panthers Fall to Sioux Falls, Top Knights

AURBURNDALE, Fla. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team split a pair of games on Friday at the Spring Games. The Panthers fell 8-2 in the opener against Sioux Falls, but took down Gannon with a late inning rally 6-5.

Sioux Falls benefited from two unearned runs in the bottom of the first inning, but the Panthers (4-18) bounced back immediately in the top of the second inning. Mikayla Benson drove in a run with an RBI single while Meryck Hardley scored on a pass ball later in the inning to tie the game at 2-2.

USF answered with a run in the bottom half of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. The game stood that way until the fifth where Sioux Falls added five runs in the frame to take control. Benson finished the game two for two with double and RBI.

In the second game, the Panthers again fell behind early as Gannon scored twice in the top of the first inning. Wesleyan answered with an RBI single off Benson's bat in the bottom half. The Knights (6-6) added a run in the top of the fifth to establish a 3-1 lead.

Sarah Linville started a rally in the bottom half of the inning by getting on base. Hannah Scheberle followed with a single and Hardley walked to load the bases. A wild pitch got the Panthers one-run closer as MaKenna Page gave Wesleyan the lead with a two-run single. With the infield drawn in, Page hit through the shadows and past a diving defense.

The Panthers added two insurance runs in the sixth as Linville came-up with a clutch two-run double. Gannon connected on a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh, but Mary Morgan shut the door with a complete game. Morgan picked-up her fourth win of the season, allowing five runs, three earned with two strikeouts. Scheberle, Page, and Benson each recorded two-hit games.

The Panthers will finish their run in the sunshine state on Saturday with two more games. The Panthers will play Upper Iowa and Nyack University. First pitch is scheduled for 11:15AM CT.
