OWENSBORO, KY - Hosting Michigan Tech on Monday night, the Kentucky Wesleyan Men's Basketball team took it to their foes from the North shooting nearly 50% from the field en-route to an 85-65 victory. The Panthers had six players reach double-figures scoring, with
Borja Fernandez leading the way with 17 off the bench.
The Panthers now move to 6-5 (2-2 G-MAC) while the Huskies fall to 3-9 (1-3 GLIAC).Â
It was a back-and-forth battles in the early going, with MTU taking a 13-12 lead seven minutes into the game. That would be their last lead, however, as
JoMel Boyd hit a three on the next possession to start a 20-3 run that gave Wesleyan a convincing 32-16 lead with 5:54 left in the opening half. The run was capped off by a big three from
Borja Fernandez, who went 3-for-3 from behind the arc in the game.
Edward Jones Jr.,
Markel Aune, and Fernandez each hit jumpers in the final two minutes of the half and Wesleyan went into the locker room leading 47-28.Â
Ben Sisson and
Jordan Roland scored the opening six points of the second half and just like that Wesleyan's lead had ballooned to 25. Slowly but surely Wesleyan extended their leading, and a
Kennedy Miles three pointer made it 79-49 with eight minutes remaining. With the game out of reach and the subs in, Michigan Tech made a slight dent in the lead, but it was too little to late, as Wesleyan cruised for the 20-point victory.Â
Wesleyan shot 34-71 (47.9%) from the field and 10-22 (45.5%) from three. They held Michigan Tech to just 23-59 (39%) from the field and 11-32 (34.4%) from three. KWC also hit seven of their eight free throw attempts. Wesleyan dominated the point, doubling up the Huskies 44-22 from that area.
Borja Fernandez led the way with 17 points on 7-10 shooting, while
Markel Aune (13),
JoMel Boyd (13),
Jordan Roland (10),
Edward Jones Jr. (10), and
Kennedy Miles (10) each scored in double-figures. Jones Jr. led the way with a career high nine rebounds, while Roland dished out six assists.Â
The Panthers will now break for the holidays before they close out the calendar year at Delta State on Saturday, December 31st. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. CT in Cleveland, Mississippi.
