Fourth quarter push leads Panthers past Pioneers

CANTON, OH - Down by four entering the fourth quarter, the Kentucky Wesleyan Women's Basketball team outscored Malone 27-13 in the final quarter to get the 65-55 win. Jordyn Barga notched her second double-double in the past three games, leading the Panthers with 21 points and 12 boards.

Wesleyan moves to 7-3 (4-0 G-MAC), while Malone falls to 6-4 (3-2 G-MAC).

The teams exchanged leads multiple times in the opening quarter, but Jordyn Barga scored the final seven Panther points of the quarter to give Wesleyan a 15-14 lead after one.

The Pioneers took the lead back midway through the second, but Corina Conley answered with a layup to give Wesleyan a 19-18 lead with 3:43 left in the half. Malone held a four point lead near the end of the half before Shiya Hoosier hit a three at the buzzer to cut the Malone lead to 27-26 heading into the break.

Barga again led the way for the Panthers in the third, scoring seven of Wesleyan's 12 points in the frame. Despite not leading the entire quarter, threes from Barga and Tahlia Walton midway through the frame kept the game close. The Pioneers led 42-38 going into the fourth.

Wesleyan started the fourth off hot, with Conley knocking in a three pointer to start the frame. Down 51-48 with 5:03 left, Shiya Hoosier hit a three that sparked a 12-0 run over the next four minutes of play. That run, capped off by two free throws from Cali Nolot, gave Wesleyan a 60-51 lead with under a minute remaining, essentially sealing the win. More free throws from Nolot, Barga, and Shaylee McDonald in the final 58 seconds secured the big 10-point victory.

Wesleyan shot 21-49 (42.9%) from the field and 8-23 (34.8%) from three. They held Malone to just 20-61 (32.8%) from the floor and 3-18 (16.7%) from three, including holding the Pioneers without a three for the entire second half.

Jordyn Barga led the way with 21 points and 12 boards, her second double-double of the year. Shiya Hoosier hit four threes and scored 17 points, while Corina Conley tallied 10 points. Hoosier and Cali Nolot each dished out three assists, while Shaylee McDonald added a season high seven boards.

Kentucky Wesleyan will be in for a big test on Saturday as they travel to Ashland in a battle of G-MAC unbeatens. Ashland, ranked #2 in the nation, currently sit a 10-0 and are coming off a big 93-57 win over Northwood tonight. Tipoff is scheduled for 12 p.m. CT.
