Panthers Topple Grenadiers

OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team backed-up Saturday's victory over East-West University with a 75-58 victory over Indiana University Southeast on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers hosted over 1,500 elementary and middle school students from around Daviess County in an effort to bring awareness to anti-bullying campaigns.
 
Both teams had to adjust to the earlier tip-off time as midway through the opening half the Grenadiers (5-3) held a 15-13 lead. As each teams struggled to find their range, the Panthers (2-3) closed out the half in stride. Kaeveon Mitchell came off the bench and connected on three, three-point baskets from the corner.
 
Markel Aune and Antonio Thomas got into the action over the final few minutes of the half as Aune accounted for six points while Thomas connected for eight points. The Panthers finished the first 20 minutes with a 39-32 lead.
 
Mitchell continued his sharp shooting into the second half as his three-point bucket with 12:46 left in the game gave the Panthers a 49-39 lead. However, IUSE would not go quietly as the immediately cut their deficit by four on the ensuing two possessions.
 
Jordan Roland returned a double-digit lead to the Panthers with nine minutes to go as the Grenadiers faced significant foul trouble. With six minutes left in the game, the Panthers led 60-50 and over the next five minutes out-scored the Grenadiers 15-5 to take a commanding 20-point lead into the final minute of the contest.
 
Markel finished the game with 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, and two steals. Edward Jones Jr. came off the bench to add 13 points and grab four rebounds. Mitchell added 12 points while Thomas recorded 10 points and five assists. JoMel Boyd also reached double-figures with 10 points and seven rebounds.
 
The Panthers will have a week to prepare for Harris-Stowe University. Tip-off at the historic Sportscenter is scheduled for 7:45PM.
