OWENSBORO, KY - Facing an Ashland team that has won 17 of their last 18 games, the Panthers put up a good fight but eventually fell 3-0 (21-25, 16-25, 24-26) to their foes from the North.
The Eagles move to 20-6 (13-0 G-MAC) while Wesleyan falls to 6-18 (2-7 G-MAC).
Ashland controlled the opening set from the first serve, eventually going up 16-10. The Panthers didn't go quietly, as a kill from
Mariah Jones ignited a 4-0 run to cut the lead to 20-18. Ashland composed themselves and closed strong to take the set 25-21.
After a 4-0 run early in the second set gave Wesleyan a 10-8 lead, the Eagles took control, winning six of the next seven points and eventually taking the set 25-16.
Set three was a set of runs, as both teams went on multiple four and five points flurries before the Panthers used a kill and an ace from
Hallie McGuire to take a 19-18 lead late in the frame. The teams battled it out over the final few points, but Ashland eventually took the final set 26-24 to win the game.
Diana Wesolosky led the way with 10 kills, followed by
Hallie McGuire with nine.
Ava Rebarchik tallied five blocks,
Karrah Cron notched 20 assists, and
Danielle Nelson added 14 digs.
The Panthers will host southern rival Trevecca Nazarene on Tuesday night in Jones Gym. First serve is set for 6 p.m. CT.
