Volleyball downs Lakers to open Midwest Crossover

HAMMOND, IN - Playing in their first game of the Midwest Crossover, the Kentucky Wesleyan Volleyball team showed out on Friday, taking down the Lake Superior State Lakers 3-1 (16-25, 25-21, 28-26, 25-23) in a tight game.

The Panthers move to 5-15 (2-5 G-MAC) while the Lakers fall to 2-18 (1-10 GLIAC).

After LSSU took set one, the Panthers opened up the second set by taking a quick 9-3 lead. Up 18-14, Madelyn Hoskins and Diana Wesolosky each had two kills in the final six points to help secure the set victory.

Set three saw Wesleyan lead 1-0, then go behind for nearly the entire set. Down 24-22, Olivia Patton and Hallie McGuire each notched a kill to keep the game alive. Wesleyan then used multiple Laker errors and another McGuire kill to take the second set 28-26.

The fourth set flipped the script from the third set, as KWC led the entire way through. Unlike the third set though was that the team behind failed to come back and win. With Wesleyan up 24-23, McGuire tallied yet another kill to win the set for the Panthers.

Hallie McGuire led the way with an impressive 17 kills, while Diana Wesolosky also landed in double-figures with 12. Wesolosky also notched a career high seven aces in the contest. Karrah Cron handed out 25 assists with Julia Kupper giving out 18. Danielle Nelson continued her strong play with 24 digs. Ava Rebarchik was a force at the net, tallying five blocks.

Wesleyan will be back for a doubleheader tomorrow when they take on Southwest Baptist at 11:30 a.m. and Drury at 4:30 p.m. Both games will take place at the Hammond Sportsplex.
