Worth the Wait

XENIA, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team had to wait a few days and change venues to play Cedarville on Thursday afternoon. It was worth the wait as the Panthers experienced a record setting day in a 4-3 win over the Yellow Jackets. Evyn Hendrickson recorded 15 strikeouts in the complete game win, setting a school record for strikeouts in a single season.

The Great Midwest matchup was originally scheduled for Owensboro on April 24th. The Yellow Jackets (19-16, 8-9 GMAC) opened the game by manufacturing a run in the top of the second inning. The Panthers (13-21, 6-11 GMAC) answered right back in the bottom half of the inning. Hendrickson started the frame with a lead-off single and moved to second on Macy Flanigan's single into center.

Madison Stumbo tied the game with a run scoring double. A one-out walk loaded the bases for Lacie Mills who drove-in another run single to centerfield. Meryck Hardley walked to add another run while Hannah Scheberle gave the Panthers a 4-1 edge with a sacrifice fly.

A lead-off walk in the top of the third allowed Cedarville to score two runs in the frame, pulling within one run, 4-3. Hendrickson allowed just one base runner the rest of the game. She finished with her 17th complete game and ninth win of the season. Both Flanigan and Stumbo finished with a pair of hits.

Hendrickson allowed three runs, two earned on six hits with 15 strikeouts. In the process she now sits at 174 strikeouts this season, breaking the previous mark of 162 strikeouts by Diana Chalfant in the 1986 season and Haleigh Ashworth from 2009. Hendrickson also ranks third in the Great Midwest Conference history with 174 strikeouts in a single-season.

GAME 2: CED 6, KWC 7
The Panthers scored early and hung-on to win game two 7-6 to complete the sweep. The Yellow Jackets opened the game with a run in the top of the first inning, then the contest embarked on a delay that lasted nearly three hours. Upon the restart at nearly 9 PM local time, the Panthers tacked-on four runs in the bottom of the first.

Hardley, Scheberle and Madison Scott each drove in a run in the bottom of the first to give Wesleyan a 4-1 lead. Grace Scott settled in and continued to put-up zeros on the scoreboard. The Panthers added some insurance in the bottom of the fifth. Hendrickson started the scoring with an RBI double. She later scored on a wild pitch, adding to the Panthers lead 6-1. Grace Scott drove-in another run and the Panthers held a 7-1.

Cedarville cracked the code on Grace Scott in the sixth by scoring four runs on four hits to pull within 7-5. Hendrickson came in the seventh to close the door and record the save. Scheberle finished the game three for three with two runs scored. Both Scotts, Hendrickson, and Hardly each notched two hits in the game. Scott earned her second win of the season after six innings of work, allowing five runs on seven hits with seven strikeouts.

The Panthers are scheduled to play Ursuline tomorrow afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 PM CT.
