INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team saw it three-game winning streak snapped on Tuesday afternoon by No. 13 Indianapolis. The Panthers, having last played on March 7
th, made a long-awaited return to the diamond against one of the nation's best programs.
Game 1: KWC 1, UIndy 6
The Greyhounds (13-2) took advantage of a Wesleyan miscue in the bottom of the third inning to break a scoreless tie. An error and single allowed the first two batters to reach to start the frame. Taylor Danielson then gave the Hounds a 3-0 lead with one swing of the bat, a three-run homerun over the centerfield fence.
The Panthers (4-9) looked to cut into the lead in the top of the fifth as
Kaitlyn LaSala led off the frame with a walk while
Mikayla Benson followed with a single. With two on and no outs the Greyhounds were forced into a pitching change to face
Evyn Hendrickson.
Hendrickson flew out to left, but
Lacie Mills moved the runners into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. However, a strikeout ended the inning and got the Hounds off the hook. UIndy added three more runs in the sixth to build a 6-0 lead.
Wesleyan threatened again in the seventh by placing runners in scoring position with no-outs. Mills' one-out single into center allowed one run to score, but the Panthers ended the game with a ground out and fly out.
Madison Scott finished two for three with a double while Hendrickson picked-up a tough loss. Hendrickson completed six innings, allowing six runs, five earned on six hits with 11 strikeouts.
Game 2: KWC 0, UIndy 12
The Greyhounds took the series finale 12-0. The Hounds scored three in the first and one in the second. UIndy broke the game open with an eight-run fourth. LaSala recorded the lone hit for the Panthers in the game two.
The Panthers will travel to North Canton, Ohio on Friday to open Great Midwest play against Walsh.
