TIFFIN, Ohio – It came down to the wire on Thursday night but Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball was able to escape from Tiffin with a 63-59 win in Great Midwest action. The Panthers snapped the Dragons' 10-game home win streak dating back to last season.
Wesleyan controlled the first half, leading by as much as nine, but found themselves trailing by four with 6:24 remaining in the game. Cali Nolot sparked the Panther offense with back-to-back lay-ups to tie the game at 47 midway through the fourth quarter.
Less than 90 seconds later, Wesleyan trailed by six after two quick jump shots and a pair of made free throws for the Dragons. Kaylee Clifford halted Tiffin's momentum with a three from the top of the arch. Clifford then came up big with a steal on the Dragons ensuing possession, and found Nolot in the corner to knock back a three and tie the game at 53 with 2:33 remaining.
The Panthers took a three-point lead with 1:22 after a bizarre five-point play. Clifford drained a three as a whistle was blown on the floor. After discussing the play, the referees counted Clifford's three, and sent Tahlia Walton to the charity stripe for the foul. Walton made both free throws to put the Panthers ahead 58-55 with just over one minute remaining.
Tiffin made it a two-point game with 0:16 left but Walton went 2-2 at the line again to extend Wesleyan's lead to four. The Dragons had the ball with 10 seconds remaining but tough defense prevented them from getting a shot off and allowed the Panthers to hold on for their third straight win.
Clifford and Nolot paced the Panthers with 15 points each, combining for seven three's. Jordyn Barga led the way with nine rebounds. Lily Miller flirted with a double-double, recording eight points and seven rebounds.
Wesleyan continues their three-game road swing at Cedarville on Saturday. Tip off is set for 12 pm CT against the nationally-ranked Yellow Jackets.
