COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team completed its three-game road trip with a 68-62 victory over Ohio Dominican on Monday night. The win marks the third straight win for the Panthers, all coming away from the historic Sportscenter.
Midway through the season the Panthers (8-4, 7-4 GMAC) have one of the best defenses in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference, allowing 64 points per game. Monday was no different as they held ODU (3-6, 3-5 GMAC) to 41% shooting throughout the game.
The Panthers held small leads throughout the opening 20 minutes of play, but Dominican pulled ahead 29-28 heading into the final minute.
Tre Cobbs connected on a three-point basket at the horn to give Wesleyan a 31-29 lead at the break. Cobbs scored 14 of his 18 points in the opening half.
In the second half the Panthers began to pull away. A three-point game with 15 minutes left quickly turned into a 13-point Wesleyan advantage.
Wyatt Battaile scored five points in a 12-2 run over the next 2:38 that extended the Panthers lead to 49-36.
Wesleyan maintained a healthy double-digit lead to the seven-minute mark when ODU started to connect on some deep three-point shots. They would get as close as 60-55 with less than three minutes left in the game, but the Panthers defense halted the run form continuing. Battaile converted on five of six free throws in the final 35 seconds to keep the Panthers in front.
Dominican struggled from the charity stripe themselves as they made five of 11 free-throws on the night. Battaile recorded a double-double to lead the Panthers, 18 points and 13 rebounds. Cobbs finished with 18 points as well.
Ben Sisson came off the bench to add 10 points, six rebounds, and four blocks.
The Panthers will host Lake Erie College on Thursday evening. Tip-off at the Sportscenter is scheduled for 7:45 PM.
