KWC falls to USI in "Battle of the Blue Bridge"

OWENSBORO, KY - Playing against Southern Indiana in front of a home crowd for the first time since 2013, the Kentucky Wesleyan Panthers fell in overtime 85-80. This was the first overtime game between the two schools since January 22, 2000 when USI took down the Panthers 93-92.

With the win the Screaming Eagles move to 2-1, while the Panthers fall to 3-2.

Early on in the game the Screaming Eagles tried to pull away, pushing their lead to 18-10 nine minutes into the contest. Fueled by layups by Ben Sisson and JoMel Boyd, the Panthers quickly erased the deficit and tied it up a few plays later on a three pointer by Nathan Boyle. Later in the half, junior Jordan Roland hit two straight three pointers to extend KWC's lead to 40-34 with 2:17 left in the frame. Two free throws by Sisson gave Kentucky Wesleyan a 42-36 lead at the break.

The Screaming Eagles started out hot, scoring four quick points in the second half before they were silenced by a layup by Antonio Thomas. With 10 minutes left in the game, Thomas hit a jumper to extend the Panther's lead to eight, 57-49. USI chipped away and tied the game at 57 before Boyd countered with a layup in the paint. The teams went back and forth over the final minutes of play and after two clutch free throws by Jamil Wilson, Southern Indiana's Isaiah Swope hit a jumper to tie the game at 69-69. KWC couldn't hit a shot at the buzzer and the teams would go into overtime.

Southern Indiana scored first and never trailed in the overtime period as they went on to win 85-80.

The Panthers had very balanced scoring, with Nathan Boyle and Ben Sisson leading the way with 14 points each, followed by JoMel Boyd (13) and Jordan Roland (11). Jamil Wilson led the way with a career high eight rebounds. Wilson and Antonio Thomas each notched five assists.

For the game the Panthers shot 29-67 (43.3%) from the field and 10-27 (37%) from three. USI shot 32-71 (45.1%) from the field and 8-21 (38.1%) from behind the arc. Each team had 34 points in the paint and USI held the advantage in bench points 47-24.
