Panthers Split Friday in Sunshine State

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team split two games on Friday, ending the Spring Break trip 3-5. The Panthers opened the day with a 4-3 win over Seton Hill and followed with a 4-3 loss to Quincy.

Game 1: Seton Hill – 3, KWC – 4
The Panthers (5-13) fell behind early as the Griffins (6-10) took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second inning. A run scoring triple was followed by a two-out, two-run homerun over the left-centerfield fence. The Panthers answered in the bottom half as Lexie Mullen connected on her third homerun of the season, this a solo shot over the left-centerfield fence.

Bailey Woodall settled in after the shaky second and pitched the final five innings scoreless, recording her third complete game of the season. Wesleyan got one run closer in the bottom of third as Maddie Dawson drove-in Jamie Tempel with a sharply hit ground ball through the middle of the diamond.

Abbey Winstead tied the game in the bottom of the fourth inning as her ground-out scored Lacie Mills, who pinch ran for Mullen. Mullen lead off the inning with a double. The Panthers added another tally in the fifth again with two outs. Meryck Hardley walk and scored from first base on Dawson's double that landed at the base of the centerfield wall.

Woodall earned her third win of the season after a complete game, allowing three runs on nine hits with one strikeouts. Dawson finished the game two for three with double and two RBIs. Mullen went two for three with a homerun, double, and one RBI.

Game 2: KWC - 3, Quincy – 4
The Hawks (4-7) walked-off winners in the finale erasing a 3-0 deficit. Evyn Hendrickson pitched another complete game allowing four runs, all unearned. She allowed 10 hits while striking-out seven without a walk.

The Panthers scored twice in the top of the fourth, taking a 2-0 lead. Both Andee Powell and Terrilynn Summers each drove-in a run with RBI singles. Jaylin Tidwell made it a 3-0 advantage with an RBI single in the fifth that drove-in Maddie Dawson.

However, the Hawks added a run in the sixth, but Hendrickson pitched-out of bases loaded jam. In the seventh, errors prolonged the inning. With the Hawks trailing 3-2 and runners on first and third and two-outs a shallow liner to left got through Summers and rolled to the wall. Two runs to scored on the play and ended the game.

The Panthers will return home next week and travel to Louisville for a match-up with Bellarmine. First pitch is scheduled for 12 PM CT.
