Panthers Win Fourth Straight

SAN ANTONIO, Fla. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team has been soaking up warm weather and wins over Spring Break. The Panthers defeated their third Sunshine State Conference opponent on Friday, winning their fourth game in-a-row. Benton McGill recorded his first win of the season while Wesleyan topped Saint Leo University 4-1.
 
McGIll and the Wesleyan pitching staff worked around nine walks over the course of nine innings. McGill got to pitch with a lead as Ian Ellis ripped an opposite field homerun into the palm trees in right field during the top of the second inning.
 
The Panthers (6-5) added two more runs in the fourth. Joseph Burke led-off with a double while Ostin Clark followed with a homerun over the leftfield fence. McGill went into the seventh with a shut-out intact and a 4-0 lead as Cody Bridges scored in the top half on a throwing after reaching base with two outs. Bridges was hit by a pitch to get on base, then stole second. Lane Kennemore reach on an error, while the errant throw flew past first base, Bridges never slowed down rounding third base.
 
ostinThe Lions (3-15) threaten in the bottom of the seventh. A two-out double scored the first run of the game for the Lions. Nolan Johnson came in relief and got the final out of the inning, leaving the bases loaded. Both teams left the bases loaded in the eighth as Seth Wright negotiated through a two on and no outs situation.  
 
Drake Hamil allowed the lead-off man to reach, but back-to-back strikeouts followed by a pop-out ended the game. Hamil picked-up his fourth save of the year with a clean ninth inning. McGill completed 6.2 innings allowing one run on four hits with 10 strikeouts. Clark finished the game two for three with double, homerun, and two RBIs.
 
The Panthers will complete their trip on Saturday with a match-up with Saginaw Valley State. First pitch at Lake Myrtle Sports Complex is scheduled for 8:15 AM CT.
