Panthers Light-up the Sportscenter with 16 Threes

OWENSBORO, KY. – A second half run lifted the Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team to their second straight Great Midwest Conference victory on Thursday night. The Panthers returned to the historic Sportscenter to pick-up a 75-70 victory over Ohio Valley University. Wesleyan got a career high from Nate Boyle while Adam Goetz reach 20 or more points in a game for the seventh time on the season.

The Panthers (6-8, 5-2 GMAC) hit a season-best 16 three-point baskets on the night. Adam Goetz made five of six first half threes, scoring 17 points in the frame. However, Goetz's three-point baskets kept Wesleyan within striking distance. The Fighting Scots (3-12, 0-6 GMAC) led by as many as 10 points in the opening half (31-21), but found themselves in a 38-38 tie after Zach Hopewell's three-point bucket with two minutes left in the half.

In total the Panthers embarked on a 18-5 run to take a 39-38 lead into the final minute of the half, but the Fighting Scots went to the locker-room with a 43-42 lead. Wesleyan charged out of the locker-room functioning on all cylinders. The Panthers' defense held OVU scoreless for nearly the first seven minutes of the half. In that time Wesleyan polished-off a 17-0 run, taking a 59-43 lead.

Goetz ended the run with a three while Nate Boyle hit a pair of three-point jumpers in the rally. Boyle also made his first five three-point baskets to start the game. The Panthers carried a 64-50 lead into the final 10 minutes, but the Scots slowly chipped away.

Facing a 10-point deficit with 3:35 left in the game, the Scots rallied to get within one possession with 75 seconds left. Hopewell and Wyatt Battaile made free-throws in the final minute to push the lead back to two possession and give the Panthers their second Great Midwest win in as many games. Wesleyan has also won three of their last four G-MAC contests.

Goetz finished with 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Boyle added 18 points off the bench on six of seven shooting from the perimeter. Hopewell also reached double-figures, finishing with 14 points. Sasha Sukhanov recorded eight points, grabbed a career high 10 rebounds, and made five blocks. Battaile tallied six points, pulled-in five rebounds, and dished-out five assists.

The Panthers will host Alderson Broaddus on Saturday. Tip-off at the Sportscenter is scheduled for 2:15 PM.
