Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wesleyan Survives Late Scare in Hillsdale

HILLSDALE, Mich. -  For the third straight meeting the Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team was victorious against the Hillsdale Chargers, picking up a 69-60 Great Midwest victory on Thursday evening.  With the win, the Panthers improve to 17-1 overall and 8-1 in conference play.

The Chargers opened with a three on the first possession of the game before Kaylee Clifford responded with a three of her own to even the game.  Cali Nolot worked hard for a lay up on the next possession to put Wesleyan ahead by two.  The two teams traded baskets for the next seven minutes of action as neither team was able to get ahead by more than three points.

The Panthers trailed 16-13 with 1:26 remaining in the first before Keelie Lamb notched a lay up to put a spark in the offense.  From there, Wesleyan went on a 13-0 run, holding the Chargers scoreless for over six minutes of action and taking a 26-16 lead.

Wesleyan silenced the Charger offense in the second quarter, holding them to just seven points on 1-9 (11.11%) shooting.  The Panthers took a 33-23 lead to halftime.

The first four baskets of the second half came from downtown with Lily Skye Grimes knocking back a pair before Leah Richardson and Emma Johnson both joined the three-party.

Tahlia Walton buried a three less than two minutes into the fourth to give Wesleyan their first 20-point lead of the game.  Midway through the frame Kaylee Duncan notched a fast break lay up to give Wesleyan their largest lead of the game at 23.  The Chargers went on a 14-0 over the next three minutes to cut the deficit to nine but the comeback bid was too little too late as the Panthers held on for the win.

Grimes led the Panthers with 14 points shooting 3-5 from three points range while dishing out a team-high four assists.  Johnson posted 12 points while Clifford and Walton both finished with 10.  Walton flirted with a double-double, grabbing eight rebounds.

The Panthers will head to Findlay, Ohio on Saturday afternoon for a match up with the fourth place, 6-1 Oilers. Tip off is slated for 12 pm CT.
