Dramatics By Lynn Spoil Panthers Opening Day

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Kentucky Wesleyan College volleyball team opened its season on Friday afternoon at the Christian Brothers Classic. Wesleyan fell 3-0 to Union to open the annual event and took Sunshine State Conference powerhouse Lynn to five sets before falling in the evening match.

Before most people were able to have breakfast the Panthers (0-2) were on the court against Union. Wesleyan fell in straight sets, 25-22, 25-18, and 25-16. Karrah Cron finished the match with a .571 attacking percentage with nine kills on 14 attempts. Jaylen McEwen recorded eight kills and 10 digs in the loss.

Later in the day the Panthers faced Lynn. The Fighting Knights won the opening set 25-17 and looked to add to their lead in the second frame. A 6-0 rally through the middle of the set allowed Lynn a 13-7 lead.

The Panthers edged their way back into the frame winning five of six points late to knot things up at 22. With the Fighting Knights holding a match-point, the Panthers rattled-off three straight, ending on McEwen's kill.

The momentum continued in the third set as the Panthers rallied late again to take control and pick-up a 25-17 win. The Wesleyan offensive attack took a turn downward in the fourth set as the Knights forced a fifth set after a 25-13 win in the frame.

The match ended with a 15-8 Lynn victory in the fifth. McEwen finished the match with eight kills and six digs. Both Lydia Jackson and Cron dished out 14 assists.

The Panthers will have two more matches on Saturday as the Christian Brothers Classic continues. Wesleyan will open the day at 9 AM with a match against Maryville before a head-to-head showdown with the tournament hosts at 2 PM.
