OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College volleyball team caught fire on Friday night, blistering through the final three sets to take the Great Midwest opener. Wesleyan took down Trevecca Nazarene 3-1 at Jones Gymnasium as
Sierra Morrow led the team with 12 kills on the night.
The Trojans (9-7, 0-1 GMAC) were the ones to get out to a fast start, winning the opening set comfortably 25-16. The Panthers (6-6, 1-0 GMAC) proved it is how you finish. Wesleyan caught fire in the second set and rode the wave of momentum to the finish.
TNU held a 20-16 lead in the second stanza, but four straight points by the Panthers tied the match. Long rallies ensued over the final points of the set and a block assist by
Danielle Brouillette and
Nicole Martin gave Wesleyan set point, 24-23. The Trojans tied the set, but kills from Martin and Morrow even the match at 1-1 after a 26-24 win.
The Panthers ran away in the third set, building a large lead and coasting to a 25-17 victory. Wesleyan held a .233 attacking percentage in the third set, their highest of the night.
The Trojans gave their best shot back at the Panthers in the fourth set. The set was tied at 8-8 when the Panthers rattled-off seven straight points to take a 15-8 lead. Morrow produced two kills in the run to go along with a block assist.
Trevecca chipped away and later after four straight points of their own were within 22-21. The two teams exchanged points down the stretch as Brouillette ended the match with a kill, 25-23.
Morrow had four block assists to go along with 12 kills. Brouillette was a part of a trio that added eight kills. She also collected two blocks and three block assists.
Alexa Davis and Martin each produced eight kills on the night.
Kylie Foster dished out 23 assists while
Lydia Jackson added 10 assists and eight digs.
Nilah Roy recorded 22 digs on the night.
The Panthers will host Malone in a week. The match is scheduled for Friday October 4
th at Jones Gymnasium and will start at 7 PM.
