Second Half Hawks Overpower Panthers

OWENSBORO, Ky. – ­­A second half surge from the Quincy Hawks handed the Kentucky Wesleyan College football team their season loss of the season on Saturday by a tally of 34-16.  The Panthers move to 0-2 on the year while Quincy improves to 2-0.

The Hawks wasted no time getting on the board, scoring on the first drive of the game.  Quincy moved 75-yards down field in less than four minutes to jump out to a quick 7-0 lead.

Wesleyan scored on their final drive of the quarter with Chris Mangold punching in a field goal from 25-yards out.

The lone score of the second frame was a Panther touchdown in the final three minutes.  Michael Walker hauled in a 32-yard pass from Wiley Cain to put Wesleyan in the red zone then punched in a five-run for Wesleyan's first touchdown of the game.  Mangold's extra point attempt was good, giving the Panthers a 10-7 lead at the break.

The Panthers received the ball to start the second half but an interception with a 22-yard return put Quincy inside the red zone.  A one-yard touchdown allowed the Hawks to regain a 14-10 lead less than 30 seconds into the second half.

Wesleyan's defense forced a three-and-out on Quincy's next drive but the punt was blocked was Jalen WilsonJaylen Taylor scooped up the ball and returned it 55-yards for the score.  Mangold nailed the extra point to give Wesleyan a 16-14 lead with 10:25 remaining in the third quarter.

Quincy responded with a touchdown of their own, storming 70-yards down field on six plays to jump out to a five-point lead.  Two straight touchdown drives allowed the Hawks to jump out to a 34-16 lead in the fourth quarter.  The Panther offense had first and goal at the five-yard line but an interception in the end zone sealed the win for the Hawks.

The Panthers tallied 322-yards of total offense, a nearly 200-yard increase from last week.  Cain threw for 277-yards on 29 completions with one touchdown and three interceptions.  Corey Johnson Jr. led the run game with 31-yards on 10-yards while De'Ondre Boggs led receivers with 88-yards on four catches.  Walker finished with one touchdown and 50-yards on three receptions.

Jalen Humphrey led the defense with 10 yards including one for loss.  Dalen Cofer recorded nine with Jalen Wilson and RJ Wilson each had seven.  Tyreik Norwood recorded one sack while Armand Childs had two interceptions for 30-yards.

The Panthers have their final tune up next week before Great Midwest Athletic Conference play begins.  Wesleyan hosts Southwest Baptist at 3 pm CT on Saturday, September 14 at Independence Bank Field at Steele Stadium.
