Panthers Fall in Extras to Hillsdale

AKRON, Ohio – In a rematch of the 2018 Great Midwest Conference Title game, the Kentucky Wesleyan College softball team suffered an extra inning loss to Hillsdale College. The Panthers tied the game in the seventh only to see their chances evaporate in the 10th. The Chargers won the contest 4-3 with the help of a late inning homerun.

The Panthers (22-25) jumped on top early in the bottom of the second inning. A lead-off single by Jaclyn Parker followed by an Abbey Winstead double put runners in scoring position. Delaney Mixer broke the seal with an RBI single. After a walk to Terrilynn Summers, the bases were loaded and Hillsdale was forced into a pitching change.

12648Julia Sayles was forced into action and immediately gave up a single to Andee Powell. Winstead came around to score, but Mixer was thrown out at the plate. The rally stopped there, but the Panthers gave Evyn Hendrickson a 2-0 lead.

Hendrickson made quick work of the next two innings, but the Chargers (21-26) managed to scratch across a run in the top of the fifth. In the top of the sixth, the lead-off hitter again reached base and Chargers tied the game on a two-out infield single. Another two-out hit plated the go-ahead run as Hillsdale took a 3-2 lead into the seventh.

Mixer led off the seventh with a single and moved to second with two outs. Meredith Daunhauer then gave the Panthers new life with an RBI single through the middle of the diamond. Maddie Dawson followed with a line-out that nearly gave Wesleyan the walk-off win.

Bailey Woodall pitched a scoreless seventh, eighth, and ninth in relief. The Panthers looked to make it four straight scoreless innings, but Emma Johnson pulled a two-out solo homerun over the right field fence. Wesleyan went quietly in the bottom half and will face elimination on Friday.

Both Daunhauer and Mixer finished the game two for four with an RBI. Hendrickson pitched six innings, allowing three runs, one earned on seven hits with three strikeouts. Woodall completed four innings, allowing one run on four hits with one strikeout.

The Panthers will play Malone in an elimination game on Friday. First pitch at Firestone Stadium is scheduled for 12 PM CT.
