Panthers Earn Season Sweep Over Screaming Eagles

OWENSBORO, KY. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team made it a season sweep over Southern Indiana on Tuesday. The Panthers collected an abundance of big hits throughout the afternoon, earning a 9-4 victory. Wesleyan previously defeated USI two weeks prior in Evansville. Mitchell Jones pitched 3.2 innings of relief to record his first save of the season which allowed Ryan Hundley his third win of the season.

After Hundley settled-in to record a scoreless first inning, Cam Curry drove-in the opening run of the game in the bottom half with a two-out single into right. Ian Ellis followed with another two-out hit, a three-run homerun over the centerfield fence. The Screaming Eagles (26-19) scored in the top of the second, but Hundley stranded two runners and limited the damage by recording a ground-out and strikeout to end the inning.

12669Quick innings followed, but the Panthers (26-19) worked through the line-up in the bottom of the fifth. Wesleyan added a run on a throwing error, but Joseph Burke did most of the damage with a three-run homerun over the left-field fence, giving the Panthers an 8-1 lead.

Back-to-back walks in the top of the sixth chased Hundley and led to tense moments in the inning. Taylor Soper got the opening out of the frame, but three runs would eventually cross the plate. With the bases loaded, Mitchell Jones shut the door and preserved an 8-4 lead after six.

Jones finished the game, going the final 3.2 innings, allowing just one hit and recording three strikeouts to earn a save. Burke gave the Panthers some more breathing room in the seventh with a lead-off homerun. He finished the game two for four with two homeruns and four RBIs. Hundley earned his third win of the season after five plus innings, allowing two runs on two hits with six strikeouts.

The Panthers will host Malone on Thursday in the final games of the regular season. First pitch at Panther Park is scheduled for 12 PM CT.
