Panthers Split Wild Afternoon at Cedarville

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team was upset in the series opener on Friday afternoon, but bounced back with vengeance in game two at Cedarville. The Panthers fell in walk-off fashion 13-10 in the opener, but split the day with a 16-2 thrashing of the Yellow Jackets  in game two.
 
Game One: Kentucky Wesleyan 10, Cedarville 13
An early lead resulted in a dramatic ending for the Panthers (15-17, 10-8 G-MAC). The Yellow Jackets (12-20, 6-10 G-MAC) bounced back from a 5-0 deficit in the opener to walk-off with a 13-10 victory. Wesleyan took advantage of Cedarville errors in the in the opening inning, scoring three times. Reece Puckett extended the lead to 4-0 after an RBI single in the top of the fourth.
 
Chase Andrews drove-in his first run of the game with a double in the top of the fifth to give the Panthers and Chris Johnson a 5-0 lead. The Yellow Jackets responded with six runs in the bottom of the frame to flip the script and take a 6-5 lead.
 
After seven innings the Panthers trailed 7-5, but Ethan Maxey led-off the eighth with a walk which spurred a three-run rally. With two-outs in the frame Joseph Burke tied the game with a sharp single into left. Andrews followed with an RBI single to allow Wesleyan an 8-7 lead. In the ninth, Brayden Sisson plated two more runs with a two-run homerun over the left field fence.
 
The Yellow Jackets came back again in the bottom of ninth. The Panthers held a 10-8 lead with two-outs, but a pair of errors prolonged the inning and the bases were loaded. Matt Bierman then ended the game with a grand slam.
 
Sisson finished two for four with a homerun, two walks and two RBIs. Andrews was two for five with a double and two RBIs.
 
Game Two: Kentucky Wesleyan 16, Cedarville 2
The Panthers scored in every inning, but the first and last in game two. Maxey, Puckett, and Sisson each drove-in a run in the second inning with RBI singles. Wesleyan added two more in the top of third to build a 5-1 lead.
 
12604The offense left little room for another Cedarville comeback in the top of the fourth, scoring eight more times. The Yellow Jackets did not record an out through the first eight batters of the inning as Wesleyan recorded six hits and two walks. Burke started the eight-run rally with a two-run single. Ian Ellis plated another run with a single while Maxey cleared the bases with a three-run triple. Ellis also homered in the fifth.
 
Zach Burton pitched six strong innings to earn his fourth win. Burton allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits with three strikeouts. Cam Chapman pitched a scoreless seventh. Andrews finished the game three for five with two doubles, and three runs scored. Ellis was two for two with a homerun and four RBIs.
 
The Panthers will play two more tomorrow. First pitch is scheduled for 11 AM CT.
