HILLSDALE, Mich. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team ended its season with a convincing upset over Hillsdale College. Wesleyan earned its 10
th win of the season, a 76-61 thrashing of the Chargers. Hillsdale, running in the top half of the Great Midwest standings and eighth in the latest NCAA Regional rankings, collapsed from the immense pressure set by the Panthers in the second half.
Adam Goetz recorded 18 points finishing with 400 in his first season as a Panther and 1,000 in his collegiate career.
The entire Panther (10-16, 8-12 G-MAC) starting line-up scored in double figures on the afternoon. As the game started, the Chargers (18-9, 14-6 G-MAC) jumped out to a seven-point (15-8) advantage through the first six minutes.
Adam Goetz started a 13-1 run with a three-point basket. The Panthers' rally lasted nearly six minutes and helped ensure a halftime lead.
A late three by Goetz to end the half gave the Panthers a 31-29 lead. Wesleyan made 47% of their shots from the field in the first 20 minutes.
Deng Mayot got two easy lay-ups to start the second half, increasing the Panthers' lead to 35-29. The Chargers were held to 36% shooting in the second half as the Panthers continued to push the pace. Shortly thereafter Wesleyan embarked on a 12-2 run that turned a four-point lead into a 47-33 advantage.
Mohamed Abu Arisha bookended the run with lay-ups while Goetz converted three free throws, notching his 1,000
th career point.
Midway through the half,
Cameron Cartwright buried another three-point basket, giving the Panthers their first 20-point lead of the game. A minute later,
Zach Hopewell made a three of his own to push to the lead to 23 points (60-37).
The Chargers never mounted a threat, as the Panthers held at least a 14-point lead through the final 10 minutes of the game. Goetz recorded his first double-double of the season as he grabbed 10 rebounds to go along with 18 points. Abu Arisha added 15 points and pulled-in six rebounds. Mayot finished with 13 points while
Erik Bell ended the game with 11 points. Rounding-out the starting five was Hopewell who finished with 10 points and two steals.
