Panthers Take Down Blazers in Extras

VALDOSTA, Ga. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team bounced back with a 4-3 win over Valdosta State on Monday.  Chase Andrews drove in the winning run in the top of the 10th before Alex Franzen picked up his first save of the season.

With one out and the bases loaded in the top of the second, Andrews drove in his first run of the game with a bloop single to left field, scoring Ethan Maxey who led off the inning with a single to centerfield.

Valdosta responded with a lead off double in the bottom of the frame to lead off a four-hit inning that plated three runs to take a 3-1 lead after two.

Joseph Burke cut the deficit to one in the top of the third, leading off the inning with a solo home run to left field for his first home run of the season.

In the top of the fifth, Ben Wilcoxson showed off his speed, leading off with a triple to right field.  Brayden Sisson hit a hard ground ball to third but the catcher mishandled the throw home, allowing Wilcoxson to score and knot the game at three.

The late innings developed into a pitching duel as the two teams combined for one hit over the next four innings.

With one out in the top of the 10th, Reece Puckett lined a single to left field and moved into scoring position after stealing second.  Two batters later, Andrews roped a single through the right side, driving in Puckett.

Alex Franzen sealed the win working a scoreless frame in the 10th.  A one-out single put the winning run on base with two outs but a fly out to center allowed the Panthers to hold on for the 4-3 win.

Despite the no decision, Devin Smith had a stellar outing, throwing 6.0 innings with five hits and three runs while striking out five.  The bullpen had a strong showing as well, holding the Blazers to just two hits and zero runs in the final four innings.

Nolan Johnson tossed 0.2 innings, retiring both batters he faced.  Joey Lara entered in the sixth and worked 2.1 innings with two strikeouts and one hit to pick up his first win of the season.  Franzen posted his first save of the season, throwing the final inning and holding Valdosta to one hit.

Andrews finished two-for-three at the plate with two runs driven in.  Puckett also had a multi-hit game, going two-for-five with one run scored.

The Panthers head to Lakeland, Fla. this weekend to face nationally-ranked Florida Southern in a three-game series beginning on Wednesday.
