COLUMBUS, OHIO - The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team continued its road trip with a 66-58 loss to Ohio Dominican on Thursday evening. Mohamed Abu Arisha and Adam Goetz played heavy minutes in reaching double figures, but it was not enough to combat a late charge from ODU.
The Panthers (6-8, 4-4 G-MAC) started the game on a 7-0 run before ODU got on the board. Dominican bounced back and with seven minutes left in the half held a 25-20 lead, their biggest of the opening frame.
Wesleyan found the weak spot in the ODU (10-6, 6-3 G-MAC) defense with half-court motion that stretched the defense lateral to each sideline. The Panthers found openings to the basket for easy buckets or were fouled in returning 34-33 halftime lead. Goetz buried a three-point basket in closing minute of the half to ensure the Panthers would go into the locker-room with the lead.
ODU took a brief 39-37 lead early in the second half before Deng Mayot tied the game while Goetz's midrange jumper returned a two point lead (41-39) to the Panthers through the first six minutes. A three-point play by Abu Arisha quickly followed and Wesleyan held a 44-41 lead. However, the Panthers' fluidity on offense changed over the next nine minutes as they scored nine points. In that same span ODU responded with 22 points, taking a 63-49 lead into the final four minutes of the game. Dominican limited the possessions down the stretch to prohibit a Wesleyan threat.
Abu Arisha finished the game with 18 points and five rebounds in 38 minutes. Goetz added 13 points and four rebounds. Erik Bell also reached double-figures as he collected 12 points on the night.
The Panthers will travel to Vienna, West Virginia on Saturday for a match-up with Ohio Valley. Tipoff is scheduled for 2 PM CT.
