Baseball Falls to USI in First Meeting

EVANSVILLE, Ind. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team dropped its first meeting of the season with University of Southern Indiana on Tuesday evening.  With the 10-2 loss, the Panthers move to 18-19 while the Screaming Eagles improve to 19-16.

Southern Indiana took an early 2-0 lead after plating one run in both the first and third inning.

In the top of the fourth, Joseph Burke notched the first hit of the game for the Panthers, a one-out triple to centerfield.  Andrew Kirkland hit a fly ball to center, allowing Burke to score.  With two on and two out, Jake Carter laid down a single in centerfield, bringing home Ostin Clark to knot the game at two.

The Screaming Eagles broke the tie in the bottom of the fourth with a pair of runs before they broke open the game with six runs in the bottom of the seventh to take a 10-2 victory.

Burke finished two-for-four at the plate with one run scored.  Lane Kennemore, Jed Arend, Ben Wilcoxson, Clark and Carter each tallied one hit.

Cam Curry threw 5.0 innings in his second loss of the season, striking out three and allowing four runs off of six hits.  In 1.0 innings of relief, Alex Franzen struck out two while giving up six runs off of five hits.  Allen Howe held the Screaming Eagles hitless in the final 2.0 innings, striking out three.

Wesleyan squares off with Southern Indiana again on Tuesday, April 24 with first pitch set for 3 pm CT in Owensboro.  Prior to that, the Panthers host Ohio Valley University in Great Midwest Athletic Conference action with a doubleheader on Friday and a single game on Saturday, both set for a 12 pm CT start.
