COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team continued to swing the bats on Saturday afternoon and picked-up an upset over No. 15 Ohio Dominican University. The Panthers fell in the opener 12-10, but earned a 5-2 decision in the day's finale, giving ODU its first Great Midwest loss of the season.
Game 1: Kentucky Wesleyan 10, Ohio Dominican 12
The Panthers (13-14, 3-7 G-MAC) started the contest with three runs in the top of the first inning.
Andrew Kirkland started the scoring by driving in
Joseph Burke with double to left field.
Ostin Clark's sacrifice fly added another tally while
Ethan Maxey ended the frame with a RBI double into the left-centerfield gap.
ODU (20-5, 9-1 G-MAC) answered with eight in the bottom of the first, chasing
Ryan Hundley from the contest. Wesleyan made some more noise in the top of the fourth with the third trip through the order.
Lane Kennemore produced a RBI single while
Cody Bridges followed with a two run double into left. Burke ended the four-run frame by driving in another run, bringing the Panthers two within one, 8-7.
The fifth inning saw the lead return to the Panthers as Clark tied the game with a homerun over the left field fence. Kennemore's sacrifice fly scored another, giving Wesleyan a 9-8 lead.
Jake Carter produced a RBI single in the top of the sixth to extend the Panthers' lead to 10-8.
The lead was short lived as a three-run homerun in the bottom half gave ODU a 11-10 lead. They added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh and shut-down the Panthers in the final two innings to escape with a win.
Maxey finished the game three for four with a double and RBI. Clark was two for four with a homerun and two RBI.
Game 2: Kentucky Wesleyan 5, Ohio Dominican 2
Mitchell Jones shut-down the ODU bats in the second game while the Panthers continued to score runs.
Ben Wilcoxson drove-in the first run of the game in the top of the second inning. Kennemore followed with a two-run single through the left side of the diamond.
An error in the third allowed the Panthers another run, taking a 4-0 lead. Their lead was cut in half in the bottom of the sixth as ODU finally broke through, scoring twice. Burke and the Panthers answered with some insurance in the seventh as his single allowed Bridges to score on a throwing error.
Alex Franzen shut the door in the seventh, pitching the final 1.1 innings to earn his third save of the season. Jones got the win after 5.2 innings of work, allowing two runs on 10 hits with six strikeouts. Bridges finished the game three for four with a double, stolen base, and a run scored.
The Panthers will travel to Painesville, Ohio on Sunday to play Lake Erie. First pitch is scheduled for 11:30 AM CT.
