OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team won its sixth game in a row and fourth over Urbana on Sunday morning. The Panthers picked-up a four-game sweep over the Blue Knights with a 11-2 win in the day's opener while
Sammy Holder pitched a shutout in the final to earn a 6-0 decision.
GAME 1: Urbana 2, Kentucky Wesleyan 11
The Panthers (10-7) continued to flex their muscles in the day's opener as they scored twice in the opening frame.
Andrew Kirkland started the scoring with a single into rightfield while
Joseph Burke's shot landed a few feet in front of the wall for a double.
The Blue Knights (0-14) countered with a run in the top of the second inning to cut their deficit in half. Wesleyan produced three more runs in the bottom of the second inning.
Levi Tanner drove-in one with a single while Kirkland plated a pair with ringing single through the middle of the diamond.
Burke clubbed his eighth homerun of the week in the bottom of the third to give the Panthers a 6-1 lead. Urbana added a run in the sixth, but three doubles in the bottom half of accounted for five more runs.
Kirkland finished the game four for four with four RBIs.
Cody Bridges also clubbed four hits in four tries, including a double, stolen base, and scored four runs. Burke finished three for four with a double, homerun and three RBIs.
Ryan Hundley was aces as he completed six innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He struck-out five on his way to his first win of the season.
Taylor Grider pitched a clean seventh to end the game.
GAME 2: Urbana 0, Kentucky Wesleyan 6
Sammy Holder pitched a complete game shut-out in the finale to earn his third win of the season Kirkland gave Holder some early run support in the bottom of the first with a two-run blast over the left-field fence. Wesleyan added two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Back-to-back RBI singles from Bridges and Tanner extended the lead to 4-0.
In the bottom of the sixth, Kirkland plated two more runs with a sharp single through the left side of the infield. Holder allowed just six hits on the day while striking-out eight against one walk. Kirkland finished the game two for three with a homerun and four RBIs.
The Panthers will open Great Midwest action with a two-game series against Malone on Friday. First pitch at Panther Park is scheduled for 12 PM.
