Comeback Bid Falls Short in G-MAC Quarterfinals

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team saw its 2017-18 season come to an end on Thursday, suffering a 75-67 loss to Walsh University.  Freshman Jenna Martin scored a career high 32 points in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference quarterfinal.

Martin started the scoring for Wesleyan with back to back threes.  Walsh took a three point lead with 1:27 remaining in the first until Emma Wolfe nailed a pair of three throws to make it a one-point deficit.  Kaylee Clifford grabbed a defensive rebound for the Panthers and found Martin down court for a buzzer-beating lay up, giving Wesleyan a 21-20 lead after the first.

With the game knotted at 22, Addie Reimbold drilled a three pointer to give Wesleyan another three point lead.  A tightly contested second quarter saw neither team lead by more than three until Walsh took a four-point lead with 1:59 remaining.  A lay up in the closing minute gave the Cavaliers a 41-33 lead at the break.

Keelie Lamb closed the gap to six with a steal and layup of her own in the opening minute of the second half.  The Cavaliers took a 10-point lead at the 7:49 mark, the first double digit lead for either team.  Kelsey Ivers knocked in a three to keep a five-point game but the Cavaliers pulled away to take a 55-44 lead entering the final quarter.

Walsh maintained a double digit lead until Martin converted a three-point play to make it a seven-point game with 1:20 remaining.  The two teams traded trips to the free throw line in the closing minute, but Wesleyan was unable to complete the comeback, falling 75-67.

Martin led all players with 32 points, shooting 12-19 from the floor and 5-8 from beyond the arc.  Lamb reached 10 points, her 17th game of the season in double digits, while also grabbing three steals.  Clifford led the Panthers with 11 rebounds, all of which were defensive, along with two blocks.

The Panthers finished the season 15-12 overall and 11-11 in conference play.  This is the eighth straight year that they have finished over .500.
