Panthers Flirt with Weekend Sweep, Fall to ODU

OWENSBORO, KY. - Jenna Martin had another superb shooting night, but it was not enough for the Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers led through most of the contest, but Ohio Dominican battled back late to take a 86-75 victory away form the Sportscenter.

The Panthers (12-9, 8-9 G-MAC) were still riding the momentum from Thursday's 88-76 victory over Cedarville as Saturday's contest started. Wesleyan took an early lead with a three-point basket form Kaylee Clifford. Clifford hit a second trifecta minutes later to complete a 10-2 opening three minutes. The ball movement from the orchestrators of the offense, Lily Grimes and Jenna Martin, was on point. The duo helped close the opening frame with a 23-17 lead.

Alexa Fisher cut the ODU (16-6, 12-4 G-MAC) deficit to two points early in the second quarter, but the Panthers answered with an 8-2 mini-run to build a 10 point lead, 33-23. Martin capped off the run with a three-point play. The Panthers led by as many as 11 in the first half before heading into the locker-room with a 48-44 lead.

Addie Reimbod helped to extend the the Wesleyan lead to 56-47 in the early moments of the third with smooth mid-range jumper. However, over the next five minutes ODU scrapped to tie the game at 60, finishing with Emily Thomas' free throws with three minutes left in the frame. The ODU momentum continued through the end of the period and into the fourth quarter. Ohio Dominican led 68-63 after three and with their long ranger jumpers falling at the start of the fourth, built a 80-69 lead with four minutes left in the game. Wesleyan finished the game forcing 20 turnovers and scored 17 points off the ODU miscues.

Martin finished with 20 points, six rebounds, and five assists to lead the Panthers. Clifford finished with 12 points, six rebounds, and three blocks while Shayla Wright came off the bench to add 12 points.

The Panthers will travel to Canton, Ohio on Thursday to continue Great Midwest play against Malone University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 PM CT.
