OWENSBORO, Ky. - The Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team kept applying pressure down the stretch to come away with a perfect weekend at the Sportscenter. Malek Harris tied a career-high on Saturday with 25 points and 16 rebounds to lift the Panthers to a 78-57 victory over Ohio Dominican.
The Panthers (14-11, 8-7 G-MAC) previously defeated ODU back in December. Saturday's version saw Wesleyan lead for the near entirety of the game. A back-and-forth start saw the Panthers take control in the final eight minutes after Amir Warnock started a run with a rolling hook shot in the paint. Rashiede Bell later drained a three-point bucket to allow a 23-21 lead. After a few defensive stops, Evan Milligan repeated with a three-point basket of his own to push the lead to five points. Brandon Hatton scored the last four points to end a 14-1 run and give Wesleyan a 30-22 lead.
Bell gave the Panthers an 11 point lead, their biggest of the half, with less than two minutes left. ODU (12-10, 7-8 G-MAC) scored five points in the final 45 seconds to cut it deficit to 37-31 at the break.
Wesleyan returned a double-digit lead within the first four minutes of the second half, 46-36, but Ohio Dominican responded to tighten the contest to two possessions after Sherman Waugh's layup a minute later. Harris controlled the boards and provided a high percentage of the offense for most of the game. The rest of the Panthers caught-up down the stretch as Hatton scored eight of his 12 points in the second half.
The tight defensive pressure forced rushed shots while the Wesleyan post presence could not be stopped. Another run in the final seven minutes sunk ODU chances of clawing back. Warnock's jumper gave the Panthers a 58-49 lead with just over eight minutes left while Hatton's trifecta ended a 13-1 run which built a 19-point edge. Wesleyan led by as many as 23 down the stretch as Ohio Dominican went cold form the field. ODU converted nine of 28 from the field in the final 20 minutes, including a two for 11 from the perimeter. Wesleyan finished the game shooting 43% from the floor.
Harris led all scores with a double-double, 25 points and 16 rebounds. Warnock scored six points in the second half and finished with 10 points and four rebounds. Hatton added 12 points while Dakota Quinn recorded five blocks on the day.
The Panthers will travel to Canton, Ohio on Thursday to play Malone. Tip-off is scheduled for 5PM CT.
