WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team edged Wayne State University 6-4 on Monday afternoon to take the series 2-1 in a 2017 NCAA Midwest Regional rematch.
Sammy Holder tabbed his second win of the season on the mound while
Cody Bridges and
Ostin Clark led the offense with two hits a piece.
Wesleyan wasted no time getting on the board, plating two runs in the bottom of the first off of three hits. Bridges led off the game with a single to the shortstop and reached second on a wild pitch.
Lane Kennemore laid down a bunt and Bridges beat the throw to third to put runners on the corners with no outs.
Andrew Kirkland grounded out but was able to move Kennemore into scoring position.
Ostin Clark kept things going with a single to left field, scoring Bridges and Kennemore.
The two teams combined for six hits over the next three frames with neither team able to plate a run. The Warriors scored their first run of the game in the top of the fifth on a double down the left field line.
The Panthers extended its lead to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth.
Cam Curry led off the inning with a hard hit single to left field and eventually scored when
Levi Tanner reached on an error by the second basemen. With runners on the corners and one out, Bridges hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield, bringing home Tanner.
Wayne State cut their deficit to two in the top of the seventh with a sacrifice fly of their own but Wesleyan responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain a four-run lead. With two on and two out, Joe Burke hit a ball off the wall in left center, allowing Curry and
Ethan Maxey to score.
The Warriors plated two runs with two outs in the top of the ninth to make it a two-run game.
Alex Franzen came in and forced a groundout to end the game and earn his second save of the season.
Holder threw 6.0 innings, striking out two and allowing one run off of six hits in his second win of the season.
Nate Verst allowed three runs off of two hits while striking out four in 2.2 innings.
Bridges and Clark each went two-for-four at the plate with Clark driving in two and Bridges one. Burke was one-for-three with two runs driven in. Wilcoxson tabbed two hits while Kennemore, Kirkland, Maxey and Curry tabbed one a piece.
The Panthers will take on nationally-ranked Florida Southern College on Tuesday with first pitch set for 6 pm CT.
