BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Andrew Kirkland got the Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team off to a dramatic start this weekend after hitting an extra inning walk-off homerun. The Panthers topped the University of Indianapolis 5-4 in 10 innings on Friday at Nick Denes Field on the campus of Western Kentucky.
The Panthers' (2-1) pitching shined as Ryan Hundley and Chris Johnson combined to strike-out 10 on the afternoon. Ethan Maxey scored the first run after a wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning. Levi Tanner followed with a sacrifice fly to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Greyhounds (0-1) answered in the top of the fourth inning as Blake Richardson and Macy Holdsworth led off the frame with back-to-back singles. Dylan Jones drove both in with a two-out double into right centerfield.
UIndy took a 4-2 lead in the fifth after manufacturing a pair of runs. Hundley finished the fifth without anymore damage, turning the game over to Johnson.
Wesleyan got to the Hounds' starter Jake Sprinkle in the seventh. Tanner got on base with a one-out single into center and moved into scoring position after a two-out single from Cody Bridges. Tanner scored on a line-drive single from Lane Kennemore while Bridges crossed the plater on Kirkland's RBI single into center.
After efficient eighth and ninth innings the Hounds were shut-down in order in the top of the 10th. Kirkland, facing two strikes, powered a shot over the left-field fence to end the game.
Johnson pitched five innings and did not allow a run, giving-up just one hit while striking-out six to earn his first win of the season. Bridges finished the game three for five with a double and run scored. Kirkland was two for five with a homerun and two RBIs.
The series will continue tomorrow with at Western Kentucky University. First pitch is scheduled for 4PM CT.
