VIENNA, W. Va. — A balanced attack and sharp shooting allowed the Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team to defeat Ohio Valley University 88-59 on Saturday afternoon. The 88 points mark the second highest point total of the season with the Panthers reaching 89 points in their first two games of the season.
A back and forth first quarter saw neither team gain a lead of more than four points. Wesleyan took a one-point lead at the buzzer after
Emma Wolfe took a long pass from
Shayla Wright. The Panthers utilized a 16-6 run in the second quarter to build up an 11-point lead before taking a 40-32 lead to the break.
Kentucky Wesleyan shot 50% from the field in the second half, outscoring the Fighting Scots 48-27 in the final 20 minutes. The Panthers tallied seven points in less than a minute with a fastbreak layup from
Lily Grimes, a three pointer from Wolfe, and a fastbreak jumper from Wright. All three possessions came off of steals.
Kelsey Ivers sunk a pair of free throws with less than three minutes remaining, giving the Panthers their largest lead of the game a 32 points. Ohio Valley scored the final two points of the game with the Panthers taking the contest 88-59.
Kaylee Clifford and
Shayla Wright both tallied 16 points and two steals. Clifford grabbed a team-high eight rebounds while Wright dished out a team-high six assists. Grimes, Wolfe, Ivers and
Keelie Lamb all recorded 13 points.
Addie Reimbold led the team with six steals.
The Panthers have a busy week ahead with three conference games in six days. Wesleyan heads to Nashville, Tenn. to take on Trevecca Nazarene on Monday before returning home to host Davis & Elkins on Thursday and Alderson Broaddus on Saturday.
