MIDLAND, Mich. – The No. 8 seed Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball saw its 2017 season come to an end on Sunday, suffering a 4-3 loss to the No. 6 seed Wayne State in the NCAA Midwest Regional. The Great Midwest Athletic Conference Champions finish the season at 29-24 in the programs first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1988.
The Warriors struck first with a solo shot in the bottom of the second. Kentucky Wesleyan knotted the game up in the top of the third after Levi Tanner drew a walk with one out. A groundout moved Tanner to second, and Cody Bridges ripped a single up the middle, scoring Tanner.
Wayne State extended its lead to 3-1 with another solo home run followed by a RBI single in the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, Nathan Stemle led off with a hit by pitch and moved to third when Bridges reached on a throwing error. With no outs and runners on the corners, Bridges stole second and a muffed throw by the shortstop allowed Stemle to score, cutting the deficit to one.
Josh Galvan led off the top of the ninth with a double to right field and reached third on a groundout from Andrew Kirkland. A wild pitch allowed Galvan to score but the rally was too little too late as Kentucky Wesleyan couldn't overcome the three-run deficit.
Sammy Holder finishes the season with six wins and five losses. The junior pitched 6.0 innings, striking out four and allowing four runs off of eight hits. Ryan Hundley tossed the final 2.0 innings, striking out one and holding the Warriors to one hit. Bridges and Galvan tabbed the lone hits for the Panthers.
