OWENSBORO, Ky. – A strong performance from Ryan Hundley helped the Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team defeat Alderson Broaddus 9-7 in game one of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference doubleheader before dropping a 10-4 decision in game two. With the split, the Panthers move to 21-22 overall and 10-8 in conference play.
Game One: Alderson Broaddus 7 – Kentucky Wesleyan 9
After recording only one hit the first three innings, the Kentucky Wesleyan offense exploded in the bottom of the fourth, plating six runs off of six hits. Adam Brown tabbed a one-run double followed by a one-run single from Andrew Kirkland. Cody Jackson kept things going with a RBI groundout that scored Brown.
Jacob Snodgrass put two more runs on the board with his second home run of the season, a two-run shot to left field. Cody Bridges capped off the six-run affair with a RBI single.
The Battlers scored two runs in the top of the fifth but the Panthers got them right back in the bottom of the frame. With two outs and the bases loaded, Joseph Burke and Snodgrass were both hit by a pitch to score two runs for Kentucky Wesleyan.
In the top of the seventh, Alderson Broaddus cut the Panthers lead to one with a two-run double and a RBI single. Snodgrass drove in Kirkland in the bottom of the inning to put Kentucky Wesleyan ahead by two once again.
Ryan Hundley pitched 5.2 innings in his fifth win of the season, striking out eight and allowing five runs off of seven hits. In 1.0 inning of relief, Nate Verst struck out one and allowed two runs off of two hits. Alex Franzen closed out the final two innings, allowing one hit and holding the Battlers scoreless.
Game Two: Alderson Broaddus 10 – Kentucky Wesleyan 4
The Battlers struck first in game one, taking a 1-0 lead after the first inning. Kentucky Wesleyan tied the game in the bottom of the second after Brown scored on a sacrifice fly from Jackson.
Alderson Broaddus broke open the scoring with seven runs over the next two innings to jump out to an 8-1 lead.
Bridges drove in two runs in the final three innings with a RBI single in both the fifth and seventh. In the bottom of the sixth, Brown hit his team-leading seventh home run of the season.
Zach Burton suffered his fifth loss of the season, pitching 3.1 innings and striking out three while allowing seven runs off of seven hits. In 2.2 innings of relief, Allen Howe struck out two while giving up three runs off of six hits. In the final inning, Logan Mallory struck out all three batters faced.
Bridges, Brwon and Kirkland each tabbed two hits in game two while Josh Galvan, Jackson, Snodgrass and Lane Kennemore recorded one a piece.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader set for 12 pm CT.
