OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College baseball team suffered two losses on Friday afternoon to open its 2017 home campaign. With the two losses to Saginaw Valley, the Panthers three-game win streak is snapped and they move to 6-9 on the season.
Game One: Saginaw Valley 4 – Kentucky Wesleyan 3
The Panthers found themselves in a hole early as Saginaw scored two runs in the second frame to take a quick 2-0 lead. Saginaw tabbed a run in both the fourth and fifth inning to extend its lead to 4-0.
With two on and one out in the bottom of the fifth, back-to-back singles got Kentucky Wesleyan on the board with a pair of runs. Nathan Stemle knocked a single to left field to bring home Seth Campbell. A single to center field from Jacob Snodgrass drove in Cody Bridges who drew a walk to get on base.
The Panthers tacked on one more run in the bottom of the sixth. Levi Tanner hit a hard fly ball to right field to clear the bases and reach third base. Kentucky Wesleyan couldn't keep the momentum going and was unable to record a hit the remainder of the game.
Snodgrass led the Panthers with two hits in game one while Stemle, Tanner and Andrew Kirkland each tabbed one. Ryan Hundley suffered his second loss of the season to move to 2-2. In five innings Hundley struck out four while allowing four runs off of nine hits. In two innings of relief, Nate Verst struck out one and allowed one hit.
Game Two: Saginaw Valley 6 - Kentucky Wesleyan 2
Kentucky Wesleyan got on the board first in game two, taking advantage of a Cardinal error to score one run in the bottom of the first inning. Saginaw scored one in the top of the second and a scoreless third would keep the score knotted at one entering the fourth inning.
The Cardinals took a one run lead in the top of the fourth. With no outs in the bottom of the frame, Seth Campbell stole second to reach scoring position. Bridges ripped a single to center field to bring home Campbell and tie the game at two.
Saginaw scored one run in the fifth, and three in the seventh to extend its lead to four runs. The Panthers were unable to get anything going, tabbing just two hits in the final three innings.
Bridges finished game two two-for-three at the plate with one run driven in. Adam Brown, Cody Jackson, Kirkland and Tanner each tabbed one hit. Mitchell Jones pitched five innings and struck out four while allowing three runs off of five hits in the fourth loss of the season. Alex Franzen pitched the final two innings, allowing four hits and three runs.
The Panthers will be back in action on March 25-26 as they take on Oakland City in a home-and-home series. The two teams will square off in Oakland City on March 25 at noon before returning to Owensboro on March 26, also at noon.
