Panthers Edge Battlers, 64-51, to Move to .500 in G-MAC Play

PHILIPPI, W. Va. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team utilized double digit performances from three players to defeat the Battlers of Alderson Broaddus University 64-51 on Thursday night in Philippi, W. Va.  With the win, the Panthers improve to 15-6 overall and 5-5 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play.  The Battlers fall to 9-15 on the season, and 3-7 in the conference.

Alderson Broaddus took a 3-2 lead less than 30 seconds into the game, but that would be the only time they led in the contest.  A hard fought opening five minutes of play saw the game knotted at 10 a piece at the first media timeout.  The Panthers closed out the first quarter with a 6-2 run to take a 16-12 lead.

Midway through the second frame, a lay up and a three pointer from senior Brittany Wells less than 15 seconds apart put the Panthers ahead 25-14, their first double digit lead of the game.  The Battlers fought back to get within one, but a lay up in the closing seconds from Jennifer Walker-Crawford gave Kentucky Wesleyan a 29-26 lead at the half.

A tight third quarter held the Panthers' lead to a steady five points until Kentucky Wesleyan pulled away with a 10-2 run in the final three minutes.  Sydney Morabito fought hard under the boards for a defensive rebound and notched a pair of free throws after being fouled.  In the closing seconds, Addie Reimbold grabbed her own rebound and drilled a fade away jumper to beat the buzzer and take a 50-39 lead into the final quarter.

At the 7:04 mark, Erin Dorn scored a lay up to give Kentucky Wesleyan a 14-point lead, its largest lead of the game.  Alderson Broaddus pulled within nine with just over three minutes remaining but the Panthers took a 6-2 run to close out the game and take the 64-51 victory.

Bria Wright finished with her third double double in five games, tallying 11 points and 11 rebounds after shooting a perfect four-for-four from field goal range.  Shayla Wright finished with 11 points and grabbed two steals.  Brittany Wells was the third and final Panthers to score in the double figures, reaching 10 points.  Reimbold grabbed six rebounds and three steals while dishing out a team-high four assists.  Morabito finished with nine points and five rebounds.  In her return to action after suffering an ankle injury, Jennifer Walker-Crawford tabbed four points and grabbed three rebounds.

Fans unable to make the trip are encouraged to attend a Watch Party at CYO Brewing Co. in downtown Owensboro.
