OWENSBORO, Ky. – For the third straight game the No. 13 Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team made history at the Sportscenter, this time setting the Great Midwest Athletic Conference single game record for points. The Panthers shot 60.2% from field goal range en route to a dominant 134-64 win over Salem International University.
Kentucky Wesleyan (25-2) is currently riding a 23 game winning streak, the longest in program history, and good for the third longest active win streak in the NCAA behind Gonzaga (28) and Whitman (25). The Panthers boast a 45 home game winning streak which is the third longest at the Owensboro Sportscenter and the longest active home win streak across the NCAA.
The 134 points marks the highest single game point total in the history of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Panthers were two points shy of the Kentucky Wesleyan single game record of 136 points in a victory over Lees McRae on Nov. 19, 2000.
Salem International knocked a pair of three's to take a 6-4 lead just over three minutes into the game. The Panthers stormed back with a 14-0 over a four minute span to regain the 18-6 lead. Ken-Jah Bosley was on fire in the first half, scoring 22 of Kentucky Wesleyan's 29 points in under seven minutes. The Panthers shot 64.1% from field goal range to the Tigers' 23.7% to take a whopping 65-23 lead to the break.
Midway through the second half Shaakir Lindsey notched a pair of free throws to put Kentucky Wesleyan ahead by 50 points. With 3:51 remaining, Latrelle Irvin drained a shot from behind the arc to increase the lead to 76 points, the biggest of the game. This was the closest the Panthers would come to their largest victory margin of 79 points, set on Dec. 13, 1997 with a 79 point win over Indiana Wesleyan, 127-48.
Bosley finished with 28 points to move to 2,049 career points. He currently sits in fourth place and trails Kelly Coleman in third by 28 points. Jordan Jacks followed up his triple-double performance on Saturday with his eighth double-double of the season, posting 17 points and 10 rebounds. The senior flirted with a second straight triple-double, tabbing seven assists.
Michael Vigilance notched his third double-double of the season, tabbing 12 points and 10 rebounds. Sam Williams finished 17 points and eight rebounds. Lindsey led the team with eight assists while scoring seven points. Charles Foster scored 14 points while dishing out seven points. Brandon Hatton scored 16 points and was five-for-nine from behind the arc.
Kentucky Wesleyan dominated nearly every statistical category, scoring 68 points in the paint alone to Salem's 64 total points. The Panthers scored 34 points off of 21 turnovers including 17 fast break points.
The Panthers will wrap up their regular season with a G-MAC road game at Trevecca Nazarene on Saturday with tip off set for 4 pm CT. Fans unable to make the trip are invited to Fetta for a watch party beginning at 3:30 pm.
With a perfect 11-0 record in the G-MAC, Kentucky Wesleyan earned the right to host the G-MAC conference tournament March 2-4 at the Sportscenter. As the number one seed, the Panthers received a first round bye and will be in action on March 3 at 1:30 pm.
