Tenacious Defense Puts Panthers Past Ohio Valley on Senior Day

OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Kentucky Wesleyan College women's basketball team posted a convincing 74-35 win over Ohio Valley on Saturday afternoon in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference matchup.  The 35 points marks the lowest that the Panthers have held any opponent this season as they limited the Fighting Scots to 35.3 percent (12-34) shooting from the field.

Kentucky Wesleyan improves to 17-7 overall and 7-6 in conference play while the Fighting Scots drop to 6-19 overall and remain winless in the G-MAC at 0-13.  The Panthers have already clinched a postseason berth in the G-MAC tournament and currently sit in the fourth seed with one conference game remaining.

Seniors Erin Dorn, Jennifer Walker-Crawford and Brittany Wells each drained a jumper in the opening two minutes to put the Panthers up 6-0 on senior day.  At the 4:27 mark, Keelie Lamb scored a lay up on a fast break to put Kentucky Wesleyan ahead by 10.  The Panthers outrebounded Ohio Valley 22-17 in the first half, and held them to 6-for-18 from field goal range to take a 20 point lead to the break, 38-18.

The Panthers kept their momentum going into the third quarter, holding the Fighting Scots to just four points.  A balanced attack with five Panthers scoring allowed Kentucky Wesleyan to take a 52-22 lead to the final frame.

Kentucky Wesleyan boasted a shooting percentage of 59.3% in the second half, outscoring Ohio Valley 36 to 17.  At the final media timeout, the senior class of Wells, Walker-Crawford, Dorn, Sydney Morabito and Bria Wright left to a standing ovation.  They left the program in good hands as the underclassmen scored 13 points in the final 4:31 to Ohio Valley's four points.

Wells led all scorers with 18 points while tying for the lead in both steals and rebounds with four and six respectively.  Walker-Crawford tabbed four steals with 12 points while Jasmine Shelt grabbed six rebounds and contributed four points.  Morabito finished shot 50% for six points while Brian Wright dished out four assists while scoring four.  Dorn finished with two points and three rebounds.  Shayla Wright led the underclassmen with nine points while Codie Drake was right behind with eight.

The Panthers scored 36 points off of turnovers and scored 16 second chance points.  The Kentucky Wesleyan bench outscored Ohio Valley's 32-13 while scoring 44 points in the paint to Ohio Valley's 18.  The Fighting Scots had 38 turnovers to Kentucky Wesleyan's 20, and the Panthers held the advantage in steals, 18 to 7.

The Panthers will have a short rest before they're back in action on Monday, hosting Salem International at 12 pm CT at the Owensboro Sportscenter.
