Women’s hoops wins third straight with 81-59 victory over Trevecca

OWENSBORO, Ky. – Kentucky Wesleyan won their third straight on Saturday afternoon with a 81-59 victory over Trevecca in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play at the Owensboro Sportscenter. It was a dominating effort from Kentucky Wesleyan, who never trailed the entire way in the contest. With the win, the Panthers improve to 14-4 overall, and (4-4 G-MAC) on the season.

In the first five minutes of action, the Panthers jumped out to a 13-7 advantage. Kentucky Wesleyan shot 66.7 percent from the floor in the quarter, and led 22-14 after the first.

After a layup and three pointer from Brittany Wells and Jasmine Shelt, Kentucky Wesleyan was in control at 27-14. The Trojans would immediately close the gap, as they went on a 14-3 run to trim the deficit down to 31-28. Bria and Shayla Wright scored the final five points for the Panthers in the quarter, and went into halftime ahead 43-35.

Both teams struggled offensively in the third quarter, but the Panthers maintained a double digit lead for a majority of the quarter, and remained ahead 56-46 heading into the fourth.

The Panthers' defense did not allow an inch of space on Trevecca offensively, which led to several easy baskets for Kentucky Wesleyan in the fourth. Kentucky Wesleyan out-scored TNU 25-13 in the quarter.

A 9-4 run in the opening minutes allowed Kentucky Wesleyan to increase their lead out to 68-50. A 19-8 run in total, gave the Panthers' a 78-54 lead late in the quarter, which was their largest lead of the afternoon.

Brittany Wells led all Kentucky Wesleyan's offense yet again with 20 points on 8-14 shooting from the field. Wells led the Panthers in scoring on Wednesday at Oakland City with 18 points.

Shayla Wright scored 15 points, which was the eighth time this season that she has tallied double figures scoring. Wright also dished out a team-high and career-high six assists.

Bria Wright collected her second straight double-double with 10 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. Wright posted 10 points and 13 rebounds in Wednesday's win over OCU.

Erin Dorn registered eight points, while Sydney Morabito and Addie Reimbold scored six points apiece. Reimbold finished with seven rebounds, and Morabito added six. All three players also posted two assists each.

Freshmen Jasmine Shelt and Keelie Lamb scored nine points and seven points. Shelt scored all of her points on three-point field goals. Shelt also finished with six boards. Lamb recorded three rebounds, two assists, one block, and one steal.

The Panthers shot 46 percent from the field, along with knocking down six three-point field goals. Kentucky Wesleyan also converted on 21-27 free throw attempts. Kentucky Wesleyan forced 17 turnovers, and scored 17 points off of turnovers. The Panthers also tallied 18 fast break points.

The Panthers will have two huge road games next Thursday and Saturday at Malone and Ursuline. Thursday's game is set to begin at 5 pm CT.
