OWENSBORO, Ky. – Malek Harris tabbed his second double-double of the season, and Charles Foster scored 25 points to help the No. 17 Kentucky Wesleyan College men's basketball team beat Great Midwest Athletic Conference opponent Trevecca Nazarene, 86-62. The Panthers had to fight hard for their 16th straight win and 42nd straight victory at home.
Kentucky Wesleyan improves to 18-2 on the season and remains a perfect 6-0 in G-MAC play. The Trojans fall to 6-15 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
Trevecca quickly took a 4-0 lead but Foster eliminated their lead with a three-pointer and free throw. The Trojans regained a two-point lead but Foster responded with a fast break lay up after Ken-Jah Bosley stole the ball. The Panthers took a 15-9 lead after Foster, Bosley, Adam Stanford and Shaakir Lindsey each scored a fast break lay up on four straight possessions.
The Panthers took a 18-9 but a 8-2 run from the Trojans put them back within three midway through the first half. Four points from Foster helped Kentucky Wesleyan go on a 6-0 run in just under two minutes to take a 26-17 lead but Trevecca responded with a 9-2 run to cut their deficit to two. A tight final five minutes of the final frame gave the Panthers a 41-35 lead at the break.
Michael Vigilance opened the second half with a pair of lay ups to put the Panthers ahead by double digits for the first time. The Panther offense exploded for an 11-0 run in just over two minutes of play. Foster scored five points in a 30-second span with a pair of fast break lay ups and a free throw.
A lay up from Bosley at the 7:01 mark gave the Panthers a 20-point lead. The Trojans would trim it down to 14 but were held to just seven points in the final five minutes of play. Kentucky Wesleyan held on for the 86-62 win, their 42nd straight at home, which is the third longest home game winning streak in program history.
Foster finished with 25 points after shooting 10-for-11 from the free throw line. The senior tabbed a team high seven assists plus six rebounds and three steals. Harris reached 11 rebounds and 10 points for his second double double of the season. Jordan Jacks and Brandon Hatton fnished with 10 points each. Jacks, Foster, and Stanford each recorded three steals.
Kentucky Wesleyan shot 60% from field goal range and scored 52 points in the paint. The Panthers held a slight advantage in second change points, 14-11, and outscored the Trojans 26-7 on the fast break
The Panthers will head to Canton, Ohio on Wednesday to take on Malone in a G-MAC contest set for 7 pm CT. Fans unable to make the trip to Canton can attend a watch party at Maloney's. The men will return home on Saturday, Feb. 4 to host Oakland City in a non-conference game with tip off set for 2 pm CT.
