OWENSBORO, Ky. – Kentucky Wesleyan's 11-game winning streak came to an end on Thursday evening at home against Ursuline, 75-48 in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Panthers drop to 11-2, (2-1 G-MAC) on the season now.
Heading into tonight's contest, KWC was seeking to tie Ursuline's 12-game winning streak from last year, a G-MAC current record.
The Panthers started the contest off on a solid note with a 9-0 run to open the game, which had Ursuline reeling early on. The Arrows would respond after a timeout and would tie the contest up twice, by scores of 13-13 and 16-16.
Early in the second quarter, Ursuline took over the game. The Arrows used their size down low to impose their will on the Panthers inside the paint as they used an 18-5 run to take the lead by double digits at lead 34-21. Ursuline led 42-25 at halftime and out-scored Kentucky Wesleyan 26-11 in the quarter. The Arrows added 28 points inside the paint in the half.
The Panthers were held to just 28 percent shooting from the floor in the first half. KWC also committed nine turnovers in the half, and scored just nine points in the final nine minutes of the second quarter.
Ursuline dominated the opening minutes of the third quarter, and out-scored Kentucky Wesleyan 19-4 in the first seven minutes to hold a 32- point advantage at 61-29.
The Arrows out-scored KWC 24-9 in the quarter, and led 68-34 heading into the fourth. A 52-20 run in second and third quarters from the Arrows put them well ahead heading into the fourth. Ursuline scored 50 points inside the paint on Thursday evening.
Kentucky Wesleyan brought a different energy on both ends in the final frame, and ended the fourth quarter on a 14-7 run. KWC's bench out-scored Ursuline's 26-7.
Kentucky Wesleyan struggled offensively all night and shot a season-low 24 percent from the field throughout the game on 15-61 attempts.
Shayla Wright led KWC with eight points and dished out a team-high three assists.
Bria Wright scored seven points and also brought in five rebounds. Wright also finished with two steals. Freshman Keelie Lamb also collected seven points in the contest.
Brittany Wells and Jennifer Walker-Crawford each finished with six points. Jasmine Shelt led the Panthers' in the rebounding column with six.
Kentucky Wesleyan will be back in action on Saturday at home against Malone. Tip-off is set for 1 pm.
