Kentucky Wesleyan lost a tough-fought match on Tuesday evening at the Exum Center in Frankfort against Kentucky State in non-conference play. The Panthers won the first two sets, but dropped the next three, (25-13, 25-23, 23-25, 15-25, 10-15). With the loss, KWC is now 6-7, (1-1 G-MAC) on the season.
The Panthers came out and dominated the opening set 25-13. In the set, KWC produced 14 kills. Kentucky Wesleyan rallied from an 18-14 deficit in the second set to take a commanding two sets to zero lead. Elizabeth Gober and Audrey Baysinger finished off the set with back-to-back kills.
The third set was tight the entire way until Kentucky Wesleyan began to break away. The Panthers extended their lead out to 22-18, but were unable to hold on, as KSU won seven out of the next eight points to claim the set.
KWC fell behind early in the fourth, and the Thorobrettes pulled away at 25-15. Kentucky Wesleyan had already won two five-set matches previously this season, but fell behind 9-0 early on. The Panthers staved off four straight match points after trailing 14-6, before losing the set 15-10.
Audrey Baysinger led KWC with a team-high 13 kills. Gabrielle Gallois registered 12, while Elizabeth Gober recorded nine kills. Nicole Venema added 25 digs in the contest, and Hannah Pierce finished with 12.
Kylie Foster notched a season-high 38 assists, and Sierra Morrow posted four service aces and three blocks.
Kentucky Wesleyan will return to action on Friday at home against Cedarville. The match has been tabbed as Teacher Appreciation Night, with the match beginning at 7 p.m.
