Kentucky Wesleyan played two final matches on Saturday afternoon to conclude the KWC Invitational at Jones Gym. The Panthers first defeated Glenville State in straight sets (26-24, 25-16, 25-10) in the first match but fell in the final match to Bluefield State (25-14, 23-25, 22-25, 18-25). Kentucky Wesleyan is now 2-5 on the year.
KWC will be back in action on Tuesday at Jones Gym against Brescia The match is set for a 7 p.m. start.
Glenville State match
The Panthers got off on the wrong foot, trailing 7-0 in the opening set. KWC would respond by winning seven of the next 10 points to cut into the lead. The Panthers continued their hot streak, and evened things up at 15 apiece. The set was tied at 24 later on, and
Elizabeth Gober ended the set with a kill.
In the second, Kentucky Wesleyan used their momentum from the first set to pull away in the match. After being tied at 10-10, the Panthers won the next eight out of nine points for an 18-11 lead, and cruised to win the set 25-16.
In the final set, the Panthers jumped out to an early advantage and never looked back. The Panthers led 23-9 late in the set, and held on for an easy 25-10 victory.
Audrey Baysinger led the Panthers with nine kills, while
Autumn Harris and
Mallory Sacre collected eight and six kills respectively.
Emily Yocom recorded three service aces.
Kylie Foster recorded 17 assists, and
Nicole Venema tallied 14 digs.
Bluefield State match
The Panthers started the match off strong with a commanding 25-14 set victory, but KWC couldn't establish their rhythm in the second, third, and fourth sets.
The second and third sets were both tight for the majority of the sets, but costly errors would hurt the Panthers' chances and opportunities to get back into the match. Bluefield controlled the third set, and held off a final late push from KWC to win the match.
Sierra Morrow and
Gabrielle Gallois led the Panthers with 10 kills.
Elizabeth Gober registered nine kills. Morrow, Gallois, and Gober also each recorded two service aces in the contest.
Courtney Gildea tallied 23 assists, and
Kylie Foster notched 19.
Nicole Venema led the Panthers with 12 digs.
