Baseball falls twice in doubleheader at Trevecca

Kentucky Wesleyan fell in both games on Friday in Nashville against Trevecca Nazarene in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Panthers were shut-out for the first time all season in game one as they fell 5-0. KWC dropped game two 4-1. The Panthers are now (32-15, 17-5 G-MAC) on the year.

Game one

The Panthers just couldn't seem to gather any consistent offense in game one. Kentucky Wesleyan had opportunities to score, but the Trojans wouldn't allow the Panthers to score.

Nathan Stemle and Troy Paris each connected on back-to-back singles to give KWC baserunners, but Kentucky Wesleyan was left empty-handed with two straight outs. The Panthers had another runner in scoring position in the second when Tyler Shewmaker slapped a double into left field, but once again came away with nothing.

The Trojans struck first in the bottom of the fifth, after Tyler Tichenor's triple put TNU up 2-0. TNU hit solo homeruns in the bottom of the sixth and eighth innings to open their lead out to 4-0.

Trevecca added one more run in the bottom of the eight, off an RBI double. It was the first time Kentucky Wesleyan had been shut-out all year.

The Panthers produced eight hits in the contest. Andrew Kirkland recorded two hits, and Troy Paris put together a solid 3-4 performance.

Freshman Zach Burton started game one, and lost just his third game of the year. Burton still holds a record of 8-3, and an ERA of 2.04. Burton lasted seven innings and struck out four.

Spencer Otto and Ryan Bailey both saw time on the mound in the final inning of play.

Game two

Kentucky Wesleyan's struggles on offense continued all the way into the second game. The Panthers couldn't solve the Trojans' pitching. KWC stranded four runners in the game.

Adam Brown and Troy Paris were the lone Panthers who recorded hits in the contest. Paris' hit was a double.

KWC loaded the bases up in the top of the seventh, but came away with only one run, as Troy Paris scored off a wild pitch.

Mitchell Jones started game two on the mound. Jones is now 3-2 on the season. He lasted all six innings and struck out three batters.

The Panthers are no longer in contention for the G-MAC regular season title, as Trevecca captured the title with both wins today.

Kentucky Wesleyan will wrap up its 2016 regular season with two more games at Trevecca tomorrow. The first pitch is set for 2 p.m. CT.
