Panthers record doubleheader sweep against Davis & Ekins on Saturday for ninth straight victory

The Kentucky Wesleyan baseball team defeated Davis & Elkins in a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Panther Park in Great Midwest Athletic Conference play. The Panthers won the first game by a score of 10-6, and took game two 10-2.

Kentucky Wesleyan has now won nine straight games, and the Panthers this season are 14-3 at home. Kentucky Wesleyan is now (18-10, 9-1 G-MAC) this year.

KWC will play a doubleheader at home tomorrow against Davis & Elkins beginning at noon, with the second game to follow.

 

In the first game, Kentucky Wesleyan scored two runs in the second inning for the first runs of the game off a triple from Jimmy Yates.

The Panthers opened up the lead in the fourth, as they scored four runs on two hits. Cody Bridges' triple scored three runs. Kentucky Wesleyan scored three more runs in the seventh, to control a commanding lead.

Cody Bridges led the KWC offense with three hits and three RBI's. Jeremy Cline also finished with three hits in the game. Cline collected a double, while Bridges and Jimmy Yates each hit a triple. Yates finished with three RBI's.

Jacob Snodgrass and Adam Brown both tallied two hits in the game. Brown registered two RBI's, and Snodgrass scored a team-high three runs.

Pitcher Nate Verst picked up his second win this season, as he went seven innings from the mound. Verst struck out six batters in the contest, and gave up just one run.

Ryan Hundley recorded the save for the Panthers, as he pitched in the final 1.2 innings of the game. Logan Mallory also pitched in relief for KWC.

 

 

In the second game, the Panthers got off to a quick start with four runs in the first inning. Jacob Snodgrass hit a sacrifice fly to bring in the first run, and then Adam Brown placed an RBI double to bring in the next run. Kentucky Wesleyan scored the other two runs in the inning off walks.

The Panthers led 4-1 heading into the top of the sixth, and added on to their advantage with two more runs. Cody Bridges reached on an error, but brought in both runs to extend the lead to 6-1.

KWC would score four runs in the top of the seventh to blow the game wide open. Tyler Shewmaker's triple scored two runs, while Cody Bridges notched a sacrifice fly for another run. Nathan Stemle cracked a single to bring in the final run for the Panthers to give them a comfortable 10-1 lead.

Bridges and Shewmaker each finished with three RBI's in the game. Shewmaker also collected two hits, along with Adam Brown.

Sammy Holder threw six innings of work, and struck out four. Holder gave up just one run in his appearance.
